Introducing Dutch Haute Couture Designer Iris van Herpen; ANDAM Fashion Award Finalist.

Yesterday it was announced that Dutch Haute Couture designer Iris van Herpen is nominated for the 24th edition of the French ANDAM Fashion Awards. So, high time for a blog post dedicated to her. For more info on the award please scroll down.

"Normal rules don’t apply..." is the motto and it shows!

Iris van Herpen combines craftsmanship and innovation in techniques and materials. She her creations are a combination of fine handwork techniques and futuristic digital technology. She mixes craftsmanship- using old and forgotten techniques- with innovation and materials inspired on a world to come. She is probably most  famous for her flexible 3D printed dresses, see below.

In her designs Iris always uses a unique treatment of material or even the creation of completely new materials. Van Herpen likes to do interdisciplinary research and often collaborates with other artists or scientists. In the biography on her website it is claimed that "the essence of van Herpen is expressing the character and emotions of a woman and to extend the shape of the feminine body in detail.".

My favourite design by Iris van Herpen from the "Micro" Collection, July 2012

Examples from my favourite collections:

Crystallization

CRYSTALLIZATION – July 2010, Amsterdam Fashion Week
The clothes in this collection look like a splash of water falling around the model, like she is being immersed in a warm bath. The creations express the different states, structures and patterns of water. Noteworthy is that in this collection van Herpen presents her first 3D-print.

Capriole
Chemical Crows

CAPRIOLE – July 2011, Paris Haute Couture Week
Her debut collection in Paris as member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. It consisted of a compilation of highlights from previous collections and presented five new outfits that evoke the feeling just before and during a free-fall parachute jump. As one can see in the dress on the left. The dress on the right  was originally part of the collection called Chemical Crows from January 2008.

Voltage

VOLTAGE HAUTE COUTURE - January 2013, Paris Haute Couture Week
Miss van Herpen's latest collection. One of the inspirations for this collections were the experiments that are being done in the Large Hadron Collider in CERN's Accelerator Complex. It portraits the tangible movement and power of electricity and experiments with how electricity can be used in the field of creation. This has been described as an alchemist approach to fashion.
